About us

Whangārei's home kill butchers of choice

A small whānau-owned business with a strong customer focus

We’re a family that understands the need for high quality meat at an affordable price.

Chop Shop Home Kill is a small local business with a big heart, providing slaughter, butchery and packaging services for farmers and livestock owners in Te Tai Tokerau, Northland.

Our family-owned and operated home kill and butchery business is located in Ngunguru, just north of Whangārei. The team serves hundreds of customers across the region, in and around Ruakākā, Dargaville, Tinopai and further north.

For business owners Matt and Alicia, nothing is more important than giving every customer a fantastic experience. Their slaughterman Rua, who raises stock himself, couldn’t agree more. The way he handles each kill is a sight to behold. He is patient, caring, precise, and one of Northland’s best marksmen.

Matt has worked as a butcher for many years, including 18 years at the meat works. In 2021, it was time to put the family first, and Chop Shop Home Kill gave him that opportunity. Matt and Alicia’s young children have been involved in the process from an early age, and they know what it takes to make a great sausage!

Meet Whangārei's favourite home kill butchers

We have a huge passion for our family, our work, and our customers.

Home kill is a method of processing animals that’s a little different but it’s beneficial for the animal’s welfare and ensures tastier and more tender meat. When an animal is slaughtered on the farm, in their home environment, the stress they feel is minimal, and that’s what you can taste. At Chop Shop Home Kill, we treat all animals with care and respect, because they deserve nothing less.

It’s our mission to make home kills easy. We’ll come to your farm (or wherever the animal is) at a time that suits, humanely slaughter the animal on-site, and take it back to the butchery. We can dispose of offal if necessary, or we can process it for you if you prefer. To find out more about our home kill process, look here.

If you like, you can come to the butchery to see with your own eyes how your meat is being processed. Bring your kids, so they can learn something new. We’re all about whānau, which is why you and your family are most welcome at the Chop Shop, too.
